February 2nd has a lot of meaning for many reasons, but in the City of Chester February 2nd is a grim reminder that the world changed for the 1st responders in the City of Chester and the surrounding communities. 41 years ago today, more than 200 firefighters, police and paramedics answered the call when a fire erupted under the Commodore Barry Bridge on today’s date in 1978. One of the worst illegal chemical dumps in our nations history resulted in over 50 members of the first responder community getting sick or tragically losing their lives.

Today we will pay our respects and honor those who paved the way for the membership today.

Just before 5:00pm the D-Platoon was dispatched to 1014 West 2nd for a house on fire. Engine 81 had smoke showing and stretched an attack line. Battalion 82 (C. Mcbreen) had the 2nd Street command and struck the 2nd alarm once the fire went "all hands". Ladder 82s crews searched and opened up the roof while engines 82 and 81 had lines on both floors. The fire was knocked down and under control shortly after. The fire is currently being investigated by the Chester Police crime scene.

Assisting on the scene:
