Busy Day For The Parkside Volunteers
Monday, April 12, 2010
-
This Monday, Chester Fire Company went Out Of Service for the funeral of one of their members. Tac 45 was among the many volunteer crews that was covering the city, assigned to Station 82 with Ladder 65 (Garden City), Engine 12 (Eddystone), and Rescue 52 (Brookhaven). Station 81 was staffed by Rescue 39 (Lower Chi), Tower 61 (Reliance), and Engine 68 (Marcus Hook - Trainer). At around 0830, a half hour after relocating to the city, Tac 45, Rescue 52, and Engine 12 were dispatched to 95 Southbound around Kerlin Street for the Accident with Entrapment. Police reported a vehicle on its roof. Five vehicles were involved, but there were no injuries. Crews stood by on the highway for clean up and went available about a half hour later.

After enjoying a warm, sunny day and delicious lunch, the volunteers were preparing to line up out front of the station for the funeral procession to pass when crews heard the police get a report of a building fire around 9th and Highland. Crews quickly geared up and raced out the door as new reports came in for a working fire. Tac 45 hit the highway running and heard Chester 11 established command and report fire showing. The Tac arrived on the 900 block of Highland Ave first due and lead off with the 200' cross lay of 1 3/4" line. The building was a 3 story twin with smoke and fire coming from the 3rd floor apartment on the delta side. The Tac crew stretched the attack line up to the 2nd floor landing, flaked the line on the 2nd floor, and made the push up to the 3rd floor bedroom where the fire was concentrated. A quick knock was made and the entire 3rd floor was opened up to check for extension and hit several hots spots under the direction of Interior Officer Matt DiDomenico (45-9C). Ladder 65 laddered the building and sent a crew to the roof for vertical ventilation while another crew stretched a back-up line off of Tac 45 and performed a primary search. Engine 68 laid into Tac 45 from the hydrant on 9th and Highland as crews from 39 and 68 performed a secondary search and assisted in overhaul. Tower 61 took the rear and Engine 12 stood by for RIT services. Crews checked the adjacent building to verify that no fire had spread to the twin. The fire was placed under control and crews were able to wrap up in about 2 hours after fire investigators finished their work.

The crews returned to their respective cover stations and cleared the transfer assignment within a half hour. However, after Tac 45 was cleaned up and put back in service back in town, 45 was dispatched to the Upland Police Station for a waterflow alarm. Tac 45 responded with a crew of 5 and arrived 2nd due behind Engine 57 (Upland). The Engine also made the response with 3, but 57 Command soon returned the assignment, unfounded.

The Officers and Members of Parkside Fire Company extended their condolences to the Chester Fire Department on their loss.

Engine 45 arrives First Due
Monday, December 21, 2009 10:30
-
At around 10:30 Monday morning, the companies where dispatched to the 3400 block of Victor ave in Brookhaven, for the building fire which was quickly upgraded to a working building fire by 52-9B, bringing Companies 52 (Brookhaven), 45 (Parkside), 57 (Upland), 47 (Chester Twp), 50 (Middletown), and the RIT Companies from 63 (Green Ridge) and 44 (Springfield). Engine 45 under the command of 45-9c ( M. DiDomenico)made a quick response with the 4 man crew in station and arrived as the first due Engine Company on scene with smoke and fire showing from the first floor. The Engine crew laid a supply line into the scene and was ordered to stretch a 2 ½” attack line. The front windows were vented and an aggressive interior attack was made to knock the majority of the fire on the first floor before the supply line was compromised, forcing crews to take up a defensive position in division 1. In all, two 2 ½” and two 1 ¾” line were pulled to make an aggressive interior attack on the fire on both divison’s while horizontal and vertical ventilation was being performed by crews. Crews had a great knock on the fire, but the void spaces caused an extensive battle that forced 52 Command to order a building evacuation and to go into defensive operations. Once the fire was knocked down crews re-entered the building to begin mopping up as well as to allow the fire investigators in to examine for the possible cause of the fire. Crews were on scene for over three hours. Special thanks to New Castle County 11 (Brandywine Hundred) for covering our local and helping us with returning the Engine and Tac back to service after the fire.
